This item failed after 4-5 months of use. The seller, Compact Appliance (Living Direct) told me to send it back at an overall cost of $75 shipping and $75 minimum charge to look at it. Due to this $150 expense I opted to have a local air conditioning company evaluate the problem. Their conclusion was that the leaking evaporator coil, and no freon, reflected use far beyond 5 months. They also provided documentation to support their analysis. Compact Appliance and Living Direct refused to accept my claim that this was not a new item, and refused to further deal with my problem, stating they only sell new equipment. I have opted to pursue my complaint through Amazon and other agencies. BUYER BEWARE!

We ordered this because my 20 y/o son lives in a converted 2 car garage and our home HVAC system does not cool this room because it was not intended to do that. The room is probably somewhere between 400-500 sq ft. I bought a portable swamp cooler that we had to keep filling up with water but it failed to cool the room. This EdgeStar 10K BTU AC does a great job of cooling this big space. I had looked at several different portable ACs but saw where this one could be used with windows where they slide from side to side instead of up and down. Setup was easy and the hose that goes out the window fit easily with the panels provided. They also give you some foam installation to put around the panels/window which was nice. I had to figure out a way to block the window from sliding further as I did not want anyone to break into the house. I was able to find a wooden rod that fit perfectly into the window track and it won't move now. Anyway, my son runs it on about 75 degrees and it quickly cools off his big room. It can be set all the way down to 61 degrees but we have not had to run it that low to get the room cool. He tells me during the night he has to turn it off sometimes because it gets too cold. We live in El Paso, TX and it gets up over 100 degrees in the day. This AC has not had any problems cooling the room even when it is that hot outside. There is also minimum installation in the walls, because it was suppose to be a garage, but the room keeps cool. I have not noticed any big hit on the electric bill running it. My son turns it off when he works or not at home. Like I said it does not take long to cool the room off so turning it off when he is not home is not a big deal. If you are looking for a good unit, this one might be for you. We have low humidity here so no issues with it filling up with water like another review said.

We were going to bite the bullet and go for central air but after getting the quotes to do an older house, and having just spent money to replace all the old windows in the house, we opted for these units and some larger koldfront units to do the house. They were terrific. Pretty easy to install and with so many hot, humid days this summer, it was great to finally come home to a cool house. The nice thing too is if you are not using a room, you don't have to have the central air going for an empty room, you can control the temperature to individual preferences. We also don't have to worry about compromising the new windows with the weight of air conditioners sitting on the frame.
