3Portable air conditioner for cooling a small room
By DCGUY
I purchased this model in the summer of 2011 to cool a bedridden home care relative during the hot summer months. My main A/C unit broke down and I had to get something that would cool the body temperature down while waiting to get a new replacement central A/C system. The unit blows cool air very quickly and has digital indicators to show temperature and settings. The exhaust hose was easy to install since my living room window extended down to near floor level. The heat generated by the exhaust is quite hot, so it is best to direct the exhaust hose straight out to the window. You could add some insulation to the hose to lessen the heat being sent back into the room. The model comes with a little foam insulation and plastic strips to install into the window opening, but you can buy more material to seal up the window better. There is a drip pan at the base of the unit that might need to be drained if excess condensation develops. When I used it last year, I never had to drain it. The fan does continually run even when the compressor is shut off (when your desired temperature is reached), so it is not like a central A/C system that will cut off completely when the desired temperature is attained. Fan noise levels are not excessive. I think it is similar to the noise level of a window unit. It has wheels to move it from room to room. It has no external handles to grab it, but does have a crevice near the top back of the unit with which to hold it. It has horizontal and vertical fins to redirect the air output. The unit comes with a remote that allows you to also set a timer if you wish. You can run the unit with or without the cooling setting (fan only) and there are two fan speeds. I believe there is also a fan with dehumidfy setting, but I have not used it. The efficiency of this system is probably below that of other A/C systems. This type of system is different from the central A/C and window units in that the compressor (the main heat generator of the system) sits INSIDE the house and not outside unlike the others. Because of this, the others can cool down a room MUCH FASTER and BETTER. But, if you just want to cool a small area and not the entire house, then this model may suit your needs. Unit cost at the local H.D. store was $249 in 2011.

3Very inefficient - for a good reason.
By T. Ryan
I bought this unit before reading the poor reviews, but for the way I use it, I would have bought it anyway. Three stars for the noise and extremelly poor customer service. How well this unit works is very dependent on how it is used. Reading some reviews for this unit and also larger units, I think there is a misunderstanding about how these units work.1. I think most folks are venting outside, which is a MUST. My unit has an exhaust temperature of 120F when cooling a 90F room. The cool air is 77 F. The cool air flow and the exhaust flow are pretty substantial.2. The vent tube gets very hot, and the longer it is stretched out the more heat will be transferred back into the room.3. If the air flow is restricted, either in the vent or the intake, the air in the vent will get really hot. I have not tried to do this intentionally, but I suspect some people are having the compressor shut down, or fail, due to an overheating condition.4. This is very important: The exhaust is blowing a lot of air out of the house. Where do you think that air is coming from? It is replaced by air that comes into the house from outside. If it is 90F outside, every cubic foot of air you exhaust at 120F will bring in an equal volume 90F air into your house (maybe not the room you are trying to cool, but somewhere air is being sucked into the house from outside.) That is the main reason these units are so inefficient.5. Sealing the room tightly from the rest of the house will not help. Some outside air will usually seep in, but if it can't for some reason, the intake flow will be restricted because not enough air can be sucked in from outside. See point 3 above. There may be a few special cases where this type of unit fills a need, but it's going to be expensive. If you have one hot room, but the AC in the rest of the house is good, leave the door slightly open so cooler house air is drawn into the room your trying to cool. Your regular AC may then be able to pick up the slack from the extra outside air entering in other places. In my case I am not trying to cool a room. I use the unit in my 105F garage/shop to blow some cold air on me.

2Don't Bother - Does a bad job at cooling
By Gene
I bought one of these at my local Home Depot. I'll be returning it soon.I don't have the proper window for a typical window unit or for installing the pipe work for this unit. So I had to improvise. With that being said, the flex pipe itself is very durable. However, where the pipe connects to the window panel thing they give you, have fun. Like someone else said, it's supposed to snap into place. But it doesn't.The unit is pretty heavy and there are no good places to grip it and pick it up.It's VERY loud!! I like white noise, but this is at a whole other level. It's really loud. Which would be fine if it cooled well...It takes forever to cool my small room. I could deal with the other things if it actually worked well. But it doesn't. I timed it the other night. It took 90 minutes to cool down ONE degree. Unbelievable. It never seems to get the room cold. It will get cool, after a few hours, but never cold.My advice, avoid this unit.
